Exercises to help you believe you are more
Several of the chapters are titled with “You are” and various words, like magnetic, fearless, and beauty. She talks us through how to accept these things as reality in a logical way that might make even the most cynical people consider believing.
My take on You are More Than You Think You are was So-So.
I must admit, I was feeling a bit cynical at the time I read this book, and I probably should have stuck to a more ‘black and white’ book until my temperament shifted, so some of my opinions may be unfairly harsh.
The Good:
I really enjoyed the chapter on beauty. I’ve struggled with serious self-image issues my entire life. A few chapters before I got to the beauty chapter I found myself looking in the mirror. I wanted to say my affirmations to myself. One of them, is that “I am beautiful” I wanted to say it as if I was talking to the girl in the mirror… so I said “You…” and then I got stuck. I couldn’t get the words out. There is one sentence from the book that I love. And as soon as I convince myself it’s true, and logically I do because I know when I look at other people I feel that way, I might get all three words out. The quote is, “It is the degree to which someone is connected to the true self inside of them that makes their true beauty shine through” And I totally agree with this. It’s when people act thoughtlessly that they are ugly both literally and… metaphysically (Not quite sure that’s the correct word). Because, when you’re disconnected from yourself, there’s a strong chance you aren’t treating your body the way you should among other things that can affect your appearance. Then there’s the way people’s faces have a glow about them when they are really embracing their life. I’m trying to do both of those things, I just don’t see it in the mirror yet.
The magnetic chapter was interesting too. All things I’d heard from other books, but I’m aware that many people probably haven’t heard them. I’m not convinced on the validity of the idea of magnetism, but I also haven’t ruled out so ready about it always fascinates me.
The last good thing I’ll say, is that she narrated her own book, and she is an excellent speaker. Emotive and clear. It was a pleasant listen.
The Could Have Been Better:
Too many words, although honestly most books in the self-improvement genre have this issue. But she wrote whole chapters, and everything she said in each chapter could easily have been condensed to a few sentences. Which I find a little ironic because in one chapter she talks about not over speaking. Also, a lot of the wording she used seemed very exaggerated and markety.
She used the word ‘esoteric’ a lot. I just had to look up the definition of it, which is also ironic because according to Oxford the definition is “intended for or likely to be understood by only a small number of people with a specialized knowledge or interest.” In my opinion, about 60% of the book was esoteric, so she didn’t use the word as much as she should have.
Everyone, myself included, has this subconscious belief that the people they interact with know the things they know. But, in reality, you don’t know, what you don’t know, until you know. She used a lot of words that are not common knowledge, without explaining them. Some she would give a brief explanation of, but not enough to get a deep enough understanding when she continued using the word later.
Lastly, the book was a little too religious for my taste. I’m good with the spiritual… but when it starts sounding doctriney it’s like nails on a chalkboard to me.
Top 3 Lines in You Are More Than You Think You Are:
“A highly visual faith can create miracles by tapping into the abundance of possibilities within us”
“It is the degree to which someone is connected to the true self inside of them that makes their true beauty shine through”
“You are powerful enough to be the sanctuary for yourself without needing anyone or anything else outside of yourself.”
Should You Read You Are More Than You Think You Are?
This book can help probably help you if: you feel disconnected from yourself, you are unhappy with your current reality, you want a deeper connection with a higher power, or your curious about specific types of meditation.
You will probably not enjoy this book if: you only believe in the black and white, you are anti-spiritual, or you have no interest in self-improvement.
I believe the author’s ideal audience is young women searching for a spiritual awakening
